We are a group of UAMS graduate students interested in fostering the development of skills in the art of teaching. Science depends on the ability of today’s scientists to communicate and translate scientific literature and laboratory techniques to future generations. Science must be accessible to students. This organization connects undergraduate science programs in central Arkansas to UAMS students interested in developing teaching skills.
We hope to develop skills in:
- Effective lecture presentation
- Preparation of laboratory exercises
- Course material preparation
- Time management
- Development of an academic portfolio
We currently network with Hendrix College and UCA in Conway, AR, and are hoping to grow our program to other area universities.
Training
Ph.D. candidates (post-qualifier) have the opportunity with permission from their mentors to teach at one of our undergraduate partner institutions. This is usually 1 or 2 lectures under the supervision of an undergraduate faculty member. Students will also present their lecture to the GSTCA leadership prior to teaching.
A certificate will be made as documentation that students have completed the GSTCA training. In order to receive this certificate (this is not a degree), students must attend at least 1 GSTCA seminar each semester and complete the Faculty Teaching training module on Blackboard. Participants will be notified of available seminars by email. The certificate is available for all students and postdoctoral fellows.
