Biochemistry and Molecular Biology

Nathan Avaritt
Undergraduate Institution: University of Arkansas at Little Rock
5th year PhD student

Why did you choose UAMS?
I chose the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at UAMS to complete my Ph.D. because of the rigorous and groundbreaking nature of the science being performed here. After joining the department in 2009 I quickly realized that in addition to being top-level scientists the faculty members of this department really care about student development and uniformly make themselves available to support students.”

Cellular Physiology and Molecular Biophysics
Lee Ann KingLee Ann King
Undergraduate Institution: University of Arkansas at Fayetteville
6th year PhD student

Why did you choose UAMS?
“I chose UAMS for my graduate education because I wanted the opportunity to train at an institution where I could be exposed to both basic science and clinical study. In addition to the graduate school, the UAMS campus includes the Winthrop P. Rockefeller Cancer Institute (among others), which has provided me the opportunity as a graduate student to witness and experience the benefits of establishing collaborative relationships between scientists and clinicians. Working around and with doctors provides the necessary link between scientists and patients so that we as researchers can ask questions that are relevant and are geared toward improving quality of life. UAMS provides a great environment for fostering interactions between the lab and the clinic, and I have really enjoyed getting the chance to be a part of both worlds.”

Why did you choose UAMS?
I chose UAMS because of the excellent faculty in the department of Health Policy and Management and because of the flexibility of the program. I have been able to choose courses to meet my academic and professional goals, and have had the flexibility to do research in my areas of interest. I have found as a student that the courses are challenging but that faculty, both in my department and in other departments in which I’ve taken classes, are supportive.

Why did you choose UAMS?
“I chose UAMS for my graduate education because it was a right fit me. For many years before graduate school, I had served as a volunteer or participant in various capacities and as a result, I was mentored by some great individuals that not only worked here, but were alumni of the university as well. They were a testament of what UAMS had to offer, and an inspiration for what I wanted to be.”

Microbiology and Immunology
Danielle FortuneDanielle Fortune
Undergraduate institution: Fayetteville State University
4th year PhD student

Why did you choose UAMS?
“I choose UAMS for several reasons with one being the faculty, in particular, the faculty in the Microbiology and Immunology department. They all were very attentive and welcoming during my interview. I got a sense that they truly cared about each student and went beyond measures to ensure their students were successful. I also choose UAMS because I felt like they hold every student (regardless of the program) at a high standard and the expectation was for each student to succeed. Personally, I felt as if I should surround myself in that type of environment because it would serve as motivation to continuing working hard throughout graduate school to obtain my doctoral degree. Taken together, UAMS is a prestigious university that places the student first and provides all the tools necessary to succeed.”
